Terrain

One of the fundamental building blocks of a map is the type of land that is being mapped. At its simplest, this can be considered to be sea, plains, forest or mountains, though the real world tends to be very complex in terms of the types of landscape and biomes that are possible.

The plan is to define a large range of terrain types which are based on real world biology and geography, with the aim of this being suitable for pretty much any type of Earth-like world.

The original Mapcraft differentiated between terrain and features - the former was the vegetation, the latter the geology. MapcraftWeb now does the same, because trying to simplify things made it much more complex.

A lot of this is based on the Wikipedia page at Biome.
